I decided to give some sort of focus to this blog, in an attempt to not ramble on and on about whatever happens to pop into my mind. Although isn't that the whole point of a blog? I am already editing myself and I haven't even made a coherent thought yet.
I subtitled this blog "Mom Away from Home" because most days this is exactly how I feel. I am a fifth semester resident assistant at a small liberal arts college and also have the privilege and glory of being a student manager in one of the campus's larger dining halls. My day consists of picking up after students both where they sleep and where they eat, hence being their second mother. I have almost fifty residents this year, and in my five semester as an RA, have supervised approximately 120 students. This year I have a co-ed floor and the stories and predicaments I have come across could fill a book, or a blog.
Dining Hall life is not much better. You wouldn't believe how many thoughtless and pointless questions I get asked per shift. If anyone said there is no such thing as a stupid question, they were just being nice. And they were probably an RA.
Maybe I have become a cynical and pessimistic student. It is possible that I am forgetting the benefits of both the RA position and being a student manager in the dining hall. I receive free room and board as an RA as well as a free meal plan as a student manager. But should I really be sacrificing my happiness just for a lessened tuition bill? Absolutely.
I intend to fill this blog with fun and more importantly funny stories of my experiences as an RA and Student Manger in a campus dining hall. Don't worry everything will be incredibly vague and privacy issues will be dealt with the upmost respect, obviously, it is not as if I am making them known to the entire cyber world or anything.
